BOAT RACE.

First Hsxt. Twa above long-looked-for event between the junior crews, for cups presented by the commercial travellers through Mr. D. Murohie, took place on Saturday afternoon last. The following were the crews—No. 1., E. H. Pavitt, stroke ; Jamieson, 8 ; Vennell, 2 ; B. O’Meara bow. E. A. Pavitt, stroke ; L. P. Bullen, 3 ; Gibbs, 2 ; Mouatt, bow. Jaokson, stroke ; W. Martin, 8 ; Sage, 2 j D. Isles, bow. The two former crews were elected to pull off the first heat, and were coxswained by T. Adair and L. Ward respectively. The course was from the bend above Mr. E. F. Harris’ residence down to the wharf. Both boats were afloat at the time appointed, and shortly after two o’clock, Mr. H. Boylan, who acted as starter, got the boats away. From the first it was evident that E. A. Pavitt’s crew was the Stronger of the two, and he managed to obtain a clear length ahead of his opponents before a couple of hundred yards had been traversed. This he increased, and on passing Messrs. Common and Co.'s store he was leading by three or four lengths. The other crew was still " coming at it" and doing very good work, by which they kept decreasing the distance between the two boats, but it was of no use, their opponents were too far ahead to be caught, when so short a distance from the post, which they passed by barely two lengths ahead. The pulling of both crews was not at all good, and clearly showed that they were in anything but form, especially Nos. 1 and 2 in E. A. Pavitt’s boat, and No. BinE. H. Pavitt’s; they seemed to be very raw, and should have gone in for double the practice they had, We must certainly say this: that, taking both crews together, the losing crew pulled the better of the two, considering that the stroke was perfectly new to them, they never having practised with him before, he (the stroke) having kindly con. seated to pull in the place of Mr. W. 0. Skeet, who was too ill to take his place, a day or two before the race. To-day, at one o’clock, the final heat will be rowed between the winning and Jackson’s crew. This will be an exciting contest, as Jackson has, through great energy, of which he appears to have a good stock, got his men into something like rowing form. The first heat between the senior crews will take place at five o'clock on Saturday next,
