FUTURE PROSPERITY OF GISBORNE.

If any visitor to this place had a doubt as to the confidence reposed by residents here in the future prosperity of Gisborne, it certainly must have been dispelled by the extravagant prices given yesterday at the sale of unimproved land. Of course, persons conversant with the usual proceedings at auction sales are aware that goods often fetch more than their intrinsic value, through the spirit of competition that permeates the assemblage while the excitement is on—especially when the articles are being run up —and they will readily understand how it is that several small sections changed hands at a very high figure. There is, however, the consolation that many of the residents here have great faith inthe futureprosperity of this district, as is evidenced by their investing money in land on a flat where good roads will not, it may safely be concluded, form a feature for years to come It is, no doubt, thought by the purchasers of the sections that land will rise rapidly in value in this district, and we hope that increased prosperity in Poverty Bay will, ere many months have passed, bear out this foud hope. There is this to be said, however, the purchasers of the sections bought the land with, it may be presumed, their eyes open, and it is to be hoped that they will not have cause to regret making the investments in small sections inthe northern “ township.”
