The Telephone. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY, THURSDAY, AND SATURDAY MORNINGS. GISBORNE, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1883.
Tne length of our Court reports compels us to hold over leading and other matter.
On account of several of the cricketers being engaged at the Supreme Court on Saturday afternoon last, the match Te Hapera v, The District, previously arranged to coma off at that ciuie, was nut played, but good practice was done.
We acknowledge the receipt from the Government printer, by the last mail, of a parcel of papers, including despatches from the Governor to the Secretary of State, Public Accounts, report of the Pacific Islands Annexation Committee, and sundry others.
The samples of champagne cider—a most refreshing beverage—aud pale ale sent to this office by Mr W. F. Crawford, of the Gisborne Brewery, were duly appreciated by members of our stuff, who return the liberal donor their best thunks for the presentation. The ale is also pronounced to be excellent.
The contractor for erecting the new cattleyard at Gisborne Quay reports that his men unearthed a skeleton on the bank of the river a few days ago. The skull was placed in the morning on a post, where the men were working, and some collector of curios took it away during the dinner-hour. The skeleton was found about 2 feet below the surface, and it is thought that the bones were those of a Maori who hud been buried there.
On Saturday afternoon last the competition for the Government prizes by the members of the J Battery, ordnance firing, took place. There was a very small muster, only No. 1 and 2 Detachments rolling up. At ter a great waste of time in wailing for the others, the firing commenced, and resulted as follows :— No. 1 Detachment, Corporal Creswell, 36 points, No. 2 Detachment, Sergeant Ledger, 16 points. No. 1 Detachment, therefore, wen by 20 points. We are extremely sorry to see such small interest taken in the contest aa shown on that occasion.
