J BATTERY.

A daylight parade of the above took place on Thursday evening. Shortly after six o’clock the members tell in at the shed and were marched out in the adjoining paddock, where Captain Winter proved and inspected the company.

Captain Porter then came on the ground and passed down the open ranks, inspecting every member of the company. This done, the men were formed into close order and arms examined. The roll was then called and 49 rank and file found present. Captain Winter then put Ins men through the manual and field exercise, the former being performed in a highly creditable manner, but the latter plainly demonstrating the necessity which exists for holding daylight parades as frequently as possible. Un forming the men up Captain Winter made some remarks to the company and called the members’ attention to the prize-firing ou Saturday, the 15th instant, and the competition for the Finn gold medal ou the 26th. He hoped that member. would not relax their efforts, but make every effort to get through. Arms wore no good to men who did nut know how to use them. Another attendance would be called on the 27tti, when he hoped that all the members would attend, as arrangements would then bo made for the next year. After Sergeant-Major Hyde had put the men through a few evolutions the company was dismissed.
