BOWING IN AMERICA.
The London Sportsman publishes the following telegram from its correspondent at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, dated September 29: — The great regatta has just been concluded, and it has unfortunately been marked by a most deplorable incident. Chief among the events was a single-scull race for professionals, which was rowed in heals, and for which handsome prizes were offered. There was an immense attendance of spectators, and the ex citement was intense. In the fourth heat for professional sculls George H.
Hosmer was a competitor, and he was made a warm favorite in the betting. William Elliott, ex-champion of England, also took part. Shortly after the race started Elliot rowed over and deliberately fouled Hosmer. A tremendous hubbub ensued, and hundreds of the onlookers did not hesitate to loudlv assert that Elliott had been bribed by the gambling fraternity to act as be did. The umpire immediately declared the heat void, and ordered it to be rowed again, and it was further resolved that the ex-
champion of England should in consequence of his conduct be debarred * from taking part in all races. This verdict gave general satisfaciion. The heat was then started afresh, Hosmer, Ten Eyck, and Priddy being the contestants. One of the grandest displays of seulHng ever seen was the result. The three got away to a good start, and Hosmer soon took the lead. He, however, was hotly pressed by Ten Eyek, who was only about a length or a length and a-half in the rear. For the entire distance of three miles the race progressed in this exciting style, Ten Eyck repeatedly spurting, and Hosmer endeavouring wi'h all his might to keep in front. Eventually Hosmer won by a length and a half in the wonderful time of 20 minutes 3 seconds. This beats all the records on this kind of water.
