The Telephone. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY, THURSDAY, AND SATURDAY MORNINGS. GISBORNE, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1883. THE KAITI BLOCK.
It is exceedingly unsatisfactory to Hud that in the Native Lands Court, yesterday, his Honor Judge Brookfield felt bound io decide to adjourn the sub divis on of this va'uable block to a future silting of the Court. Taking the case, as presented before the the Court, at the numerous hearings for months past, we du not think, how ever, he could well have acted otherwise. No doubt, the non-settlemen' of the case is a direct drawback, retarding as it does the opening up and oecuualion of a most valuable estate, which, owing to its close proxttn ty to Gisborne, would be of immense benefit lo the business people of this town. We do no like to lav too much blame at the door of anyone, b it a-e compelled to charge the supporters of the New Zealand Land Company with being the main cause of retarding the satisfactory sub-division of the land, by their efforts to secure a valuable freehold to themselves for which no adequate eonsid ration has or would be paid I'ho Court had, we are sorry to say, no other course open than that it adopted owing to a number of conflicting interests being in existence, and we think it is quite lime that the supporters of the New Zealand Land Company permitted their opposition to the settlement of the sub-division difficulty to subside. We are anxious to see the difficulty overcome as soon as possible, so that the Natives mly be in receipt of fair rents, and persons desirous of making comfortable homes for themselves may be able to do so. The question is one of grave importance, and we are sorry that pressure on our space prevents us dealing with it at greater length at present. We shall, however, take the earliest opportunity of recurring to this most important subject.
