The Cabinet yesterday afternoon decided to appoint the following gentlemen jiojofficiai aasiguees under the new Bankruptcy Act, which comes into operationgon the Ist Janu* ary, 1884 Mr C. C. Graham, for the Wellington district; Mr C. E. Latter, for Christchurch ; Mr John Lawson, for Auckland ; and Mr Ashcroft, for Dunedin. These appointments are of course subject to the consent of the Governor in Council; but as this procedure is merely a mutter of form they may be regarded as affirmed. Mr Graham is, xt is scarcely necetssaiy to state, the present Town Clerk of the city of Wellington, which office, it is understood he would, under any consideration, have vacated at the termination of the present year in favor of a lawyer Town Clerk, who, however, has yet to be appointed. Mr Ashcroft, the official assignee for Otago, is the late editor of the Otago D*ily Timet ; whilst Mr Lawson, who is appointed for Auckland district, may really be regarded as a Wellington man, he having been the accountant for the firm of Messrs Brogden and Sons during the period that firm were engaged in their railway contracts. Subsequent to that time Mr Lawson was appointed a Commissioner of hallways for the North North Island, which position he filled up to the time the office was abolished. Mr Ashcroft’s appointment will probably prove a popular one to a section, at any rate, of the Otago community.
