Thz following item* ot sporting news we cull from our Home exchange* i— The October meeting at Newmarket, opened on September 26. The Welter Handicap race was won by W, N. Redfern'* Vanderlund ; W. Saudersons's Canard, 2 J. R. Keene’s Bolero, 3. Seven starter*. The Great Eastern Railway Handicap wu won by Cumberland's Amy Melville ; Roseberry’s Narcissa, 2 ; J. Executrix, 3, Seven starters. Granby Stakes (two-year-olds) won by Lord Roseberry's Saviour ; Lorillard'a Nievan, 2 ) Prince SoltykofFa Diateate, 3, Four starters. Keene, the American turf man, gave Garrison, the Brighton Beach jockey, who rode his horse Bolero in the Handicap on Thursday, 20th September, £3OO. Walton, the American “ plunger,” took to a heavy amount the long odds offered against hi* mare Girofle, for the Cesarewitch and Cambridge Stakes. He made a clean sweep of the bookmakers' “ ring ” at Newmarket. The Cesarewitch Stakes at Newmarket were won on October Sth by Don Juan | Harkness second, and Cornua third. There were 22 starters. When the leaders were six furlongs from home, Glroflfl fell away beaten. This was one of the race* " Plan- fl ger" Walton was so confident of winning with his mare. There was a fierce dispute betwjm Walton, owner of the Giront mere, trainer Day, concerning her running in the Cesarewitch Stakes race. At first it was alleged Girofie was poisoned, and a veterin- fl cry surgeon examined her. He testified fl that nothing was wrong. The matter wu W referred to the Jockey Club, and Walton transferred hi* horses to trainer Sherwood. Walton’s heavy backing of Girofld induced a number of Americans iu London to put money on t”e mare, and they are heavy losers by her failure to win the race. Walton's means arc swept away. Keene’s Foxhall is on sale as a stud horse. A walking match between Scott and Edwards for 48 hours and 24 hours respectively for £lOO, ioser to receive £25. ha* been arranged, and is expected to come off at an early date.
