l?l ’ inC ”' NAPIER, On Sunday evening Captain Setten, of the ship Pleiades, now lying in tae roadstead, came ashore in a boat with four of his crew to take off the first mate. There was a nasty ripping sea on the bar outside, but ths boat got ashore all right, and with six aboard started to return. On the bar a see struck the bout broadside on, capsizing her. Captain Kraeft, the Harbor Muster, and Captain Tonkin, of the Langstone, put off to the rescue, and the pilot’s boat was on the scene in three minutes, but only throe men (the captain and two A.B.’s) were saved. 'I ho first and second mate and one seaman were drowned. Tho names of the men comprising the orew of the boat were Captain Setten, C, A. Stevens (chief officer), L, O. Vatoh (third mate). T. Kerr, J. L. Grey (seamen), and A. H. Kirby (apprentice), all of the ship Pleiades. Tlie boat proceeded safely after starting until the worst part of the rip on 1 the bar was passed. When abreast of the 1 end of Rangatira bank, a heavy break 1 caught her nearly broadside on, and turned ' her oompletely over. A few persons were 1 standing about tho breastwork whan the ' ucoldctit happened, watching to see how the 1 boat (a high gig) behaved when passing ■ through tho jobbling sea on the bar, Among the spoctatorz were H. Kraeft, Harbor ’ Maator, uncl Oft pt. Tonkin, of the barque ‘ Langstonc. On observing what had happened both ran rapidly for the means of rendering assistance, Kraeft making for tho pilo jboat, which was lying moored at both ends 1 *of the “ Iron Pot,” and Captain Tonkin fun 1 ning to tho boat belonging to tho s.e. Weka. Willing voluntejre to mm tho bolts follow 1 ocl) and within nn almost incredibly short ' space of time both boats were manned and were speeding rapidly down tho port en_ trance to where tho men wars thrown out of ' tho capsized gig and were struggling in the ! water. Tho pilot boat reached tho scene of the accident first. The Wcka’s bu&t, which ' had to be launched, and fur which oars had to be rapidly gathered up from other boats before starting, was not many seconds later. ’ Just before the pilot boat reached the capsized gig, Kraeft saw the six men in the water, but when the next wave had rolled passed, two had disappeared. There then remained visible only Oapt. Setten, who was clinging to the overturned boat, tho apprentice, Kirby, who had managed to secure the boat’s mast, and the seamen, Grey, and the first mate. These latter were at opposite ends of an oar, the mate clutching tho handle, and Grey with tho blade clutched in his teeth, swimming slrongly in the endeavour to save himself and his companion clinging to the ot her end of the oar. When the rescuing boat was within a few yards of Grey, a wave swept tho first mate from his grip of the oar, and he was never seen afterwards. Tho pilot rescued the remaining men. Captain Setten had just dropped into unc msciousnees, as he was pulled into the boat, but the other two did not srem so affected by their struggle in the breakers as might have beon expected. The three men were quickly conveyed to the Crown Hotel, and put to bod, and Dr Matthews arived aud administered restoratives to Captain Setton and the two seamen. Captain Setten needed tho most attention, as he became hysterical, ae consciousness returned, and the dreadful scene from which he had just recovered cam-a back to his memory.
