From our own Correspondent) Christchurch. Friday. The weather this morning was fine, but cold, and a fair amount of work was done. The only cup horses out were Tim Whiffler, Welcome Jack, Envious, Tasman, and Adamant. All did very serviceable work, especially Welcome Jack and Envious, who covered a mile and a half in splendid style. Dime, in a fast half mile, showed capital form. Marion and Ugly Buck went once round, finishing very fast. Siesta and Johnny Faulkner covered a mile at racing speed, the mare having the best of it. Emir t Bey went two miles at half pace. Molly Bawn and Violin weut twice round, the former pulling up lame. Rubine, Mischief K and Tim Whiffler did two miles at threeF quarter pace in good style. All the steeplechasers did good useful work. There is very little alteration in the betting market. Hippodamia is hardening for the Cup, 100 to 12 being offered about her. Melbourne, Thursday. The following is this evening’s betting :— Marybyrnong Plate—B to I against David, V.R.C. Derby—Even money ou Archie, 5 to 2 against Off Color. Melbourne Cup- 9 tn 1 against Calma, 14 to 1 against Aide-de-Camp. The follow ing tips have been given by “Augur,” in the “ 4ustralasian,” and “ Asmodeus,” in the “ Leader — For the V.R.C Derby, Augur’s tip is— Archie, 1 ; Martini-Henri, 2; Off Color, 3; and for ti e Melbourne Cup, Nicholas or jwDe-pot-A Asmodeus’s tip for the V.R.C. Derby is Archie, 1 ; Off Color, 2 ; Sardius, 3, Asmodeus tips Stockwell for the Melbourne Cup.
Augur gives the following as the probable •tartars for :the V.R.C. Derby Archie, Hurrieone, Ike, Kingsdale, Little Sister, Martini-Henri, Off Color, Sardius, Signor, Napier, and Vernet. Asmodeus thinks the following will be the only starters : Archie, Hurricane, Martini Henri, ’-fl Color, Signor, Napier, Sardius, aud Vernet.
