MURDER AT MUREWAI.
A report has just reached us of the death of a man named Rapaea, noted as a “ Tohunga Whaiwhaia,” or Wizard, by shooting. It would appear that the late death of a young chief, Wi Kaipuke, is attributed to the subtle witchcraft uf Kupaea, as when Wi Knipuke was lying ill, he said to Kapaea, it is a demon of yours, that fuming me. This was admitted, or at nut denied, and the anger of the tribe soon aroused against the wizard, who pursued into the bush and shot. The du not look upon this sort of as a crime, as we have during the last years of knowledge, had several of these MH summary executions of “ Pohunga,” at Wairoa, and at several settlements along the East Coast. The natives are extremely superstitious and fully believe in the weird ' powers of sorcerers. | We understand the police have taken J steps to investigate the matter.
