Poverty Bay Standard. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY, THURSDAY AND SATURDAY MORNINGS. GISBORNE : THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25. 1883.

A number of our readers will, this morning, no doubt, look down our columns for a full report of the Poverty Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s Show held at Patutahi on Tuesday last, and be somewhat surprised to find it so meagre. We are compelled to explain that this has been caused by the action of certain individuals who, iu utter disregard to all courtesy or public convenience, seek, by every conceivable means in their power to prevent thia journal from obtaining that information which is so necessary for the public’s knowledge and convenience. In every instance where certain members of “the clique” have the control or direction of affairs it is only by the greatest perseverance and persistency that we can possibly obtain the, most meagre information which, in any other community outside this one, is most willingly and courteously afforded to all branches of the Press alike. In no case has this spirit been manifested stronger than in the conduct of the Agricultural and pastoral Show this year. No reporter’s ticket,, or intimation of any sort, was sent to our office in the usual manner, and on arrriving on the ground not even a catalogue or the slightest information, or even common-placed civility, could be obtained. A mild expostulation on the part of our representative was met with the broad remark that “if it was

not worth coining for it was not worth having.” Now we are determined to speak the truth with respect to this show. The whole affair has been a most miserable failure, and a disgrace to the district, which failure has been brought about by the narrowminded prejudices which have caused the show to be conducted for the few instead of the many, and it is only by sweeping this clogging and deterrent effect away that the district can reasonably hope to make any show which will bear even a favorable comparison with other places

Singer’s Sewing Machines, 2s 6d per week Repairs, parts, etc., to be had at the Singer Manufacturing Company’s Depot, Gladstone road.

On Saturday next the 27th, Messrs Wilson and Piokersgill, will appear at Parnell & Boylan’s Hall with their inimitable show of Mark Twain’s “ Innocents Abroad,” Full particulars will be given in our next.

We hear it confidentially rumoured that a certain gentleman deeply concerned in a most disgraceful Native land transaction did not go to Sydney, and did not lose the boat, and did not even leave Gisborne.

The Government has decided upon offering 67 sections in the township of Kawhia, varying in area from 28 perches to 1 rood 26 perches, the upset price varying from £4O for the former down to £l2 10s for 1 rood 23 perches. The sale takes place at the Land Office, .Auckland, on the 23rd January next. We are very sorry to hear of Mr R. H. Fisher’s intended departure for Christchurch shortly. In another column an announcement appears to the effect that his effect that his household effects will be sold to-day at Messrs Graham Pitt & Bennett’s auction mart, at 2 p. m. The statement in last nights “Herald” to the effect that Messrs Kennedy and Bennett took the first prize for best kept harness and spring cart horse for the last three years is contradicted, as it is asserted that the above prizes were taken by Mr Johnstone last year.

The important Kaith subdivision comes on in the Native Lands Court this morning. It is sincerely to be hoped that His Honor, Judge Brookfield, will succeed in effecting a division on account of the immense importance, such a result would have on the development and general welfare of the district.

A great tangi has been held at the Murewai, over the body of Wi Kaipuke, sou of Haka Kgarangione. A very large concourse of Natives attended, and great weeping and wiling was indulged in. Yesterday morn- .... the body was conveyed by boat to >. aareongaonga to its last resting place, when the women assembled on the beach at sunrise, and with much concern and gesticulation bid farewell to the departing body.

The programme of the “ Sable Orphans ” appears in another column. In the first part, “ Razors in the Air,” by Mr A. L. D. Fraser, and “ Uncle Jefferson,” by Mr J. G. Henderson, and “ Upidee,” by Mr Pearce, are all original local songs, which are sure to afford great amusement, whilst the new and original Negro musical drama entitled, “ Wagner Outwitted,” is calculated to “ bring down the house.”
