THE CHINESE IN SAN FRANCISCO.
It would appear from the latest report! that the restriction of immigration has not diminished the Chinese Colony in San Irancisco. On the contrary, a letter from that city says that there seem to be more Chinese in the streets than when every Oriential steamship brought from 500 to 800 coolies. This is partly owing to the increased demand . for labour in consequence of the scarcity of | good domestic servants, and the rapid growth L of small manufactories. Although the cl £ 8 dealers prominently announce that nono but y .white labor is employed, it is stated that j there is no cigar sold in San unleFS it be a genuine Havana, or a Minim cheroot — which is above thS suspicion of having been manipulated by Chinese hands. Dealers who stand out against the Celestial competition go to the wall. Again, t e Chinese are most resolute and pestering. When a Chinaman finds that fee has made himself indcspensible in a .Krttiehold, he is as arbitrary and domir?<eiingas the Irish. The tendency of the ra<?e when they once enter into trade or manufacture, is to monopolise it. They secured control of the pork some years ago, and now every pound ‘of pork sold in San Francisco parses through their hands, and they frequently impose heavy fines on hog-growers who attempt to sell stock direct to white butchers. The Chinese have also gained ft practical monopoly of washing throughout the State, as well as a control of the «g-»r manufacture, and there are signs that they will soon have control of the boot and shoe manufacture, as well as that of brooms, alia, underwear, &c. It is a r.’ady calculated that one-half the manufacturing in San Francisco is done by Chinese.
