We do not hold ouraelves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents]. :o: WATER SUPPLY FOR GISBORNE. TO THE EDITOR. Sir —There are people in Gisborne who «ee tremendous obstacles in the way of providing this town with a water supply. To such the following may be of interest, and may perhaps prove to them that there is nothing so n«ar ti e impossible in the matter us eotne seem to imagine:— “ Approximately the total cost of the water-works will be £1,300 The indicated pressure is 80;b to the square inch at the east end of the town, and 1201 b at the west end. The total length of the piping is one-and-a-half miles, and the total ia.ll close ou 300 feet. The concrete reservoir is estimated to hold three days' supply, The piping at the head of the race is six inches in diameter ; the second section is five-inch, and for the remaining part of the distance four-inch piping is u*ed. The whole of the ni terial used was ob.ained Lorn Messrs A. and T Burt, of Dunedin.” The foregoing extract refers to water-works recently opened at T-ipmui, Otago. The total amount borrowed by the Borough Council was £2.500. The only difficulty experienced was in acquiring the water-right, which was at the time in private hands; but after considerable hard fighting it whs proved to the holders, at a large cost to themselves, that water for domestic purposes., such as supplying the inhabit ,nts of a town, could be taken over the heads of all holders.—l am, &c., A. A. G.
