The “ Otago Daily Times ” says:—“ The Gisborne Hospital has had a windfall. The secretary was on a canvass for subscriptions, and on his rounds fell in with Mr Percivij Barker (an old Dunedin resident, by the way), Just at the moment Mr Allan McDonald, of Parliamentary and lawn-tennis renown, went by, and said Mr Ba ker, probably jokingly, ‘ There goes the working mans’s friend ; ask him, and I’ll give double what he does.’ The secretary ‘ asked him ’; Mr McDonald ‘ donated ’ to the handsome extent of 100 golden sovereigns. Mr Barker kept his word, and paid his £2OO, and the Gisborne Hospital finds itself the richer by £3OO and the like amount of Government subsidy. The secretary did a happy stroke of business in those few moments, and Mr Barker will no doubt met Mr McDonald in future with feeling! slightly mixed.” Our worthy contemporary seems to be rather misinformed upon at leatt one point in connection with the above. An attempt has been made to show that Mr P. Barker was somewhat tak> n aback by the unusual munifience of Mr McDonald, and that he (McDonald) gave Mr P. Barker “ a run for his money,” As to whether this is true or false is best demonstrated by the fact that Mr Barker authorised us to state that he again challcLg’jd Mr McDonald to repeat the donation and he will again double the amoun let it be cither in hundreds or thouianda.
