We are pleased to inform our readers that permission has been given by the Government to proceed with the erection of the new Volunteer drill shed at the back of the Government Buildings, and that Sergeant Ledger, the contractor, commences operations to-day. It is expected that the erection will be completed in about tire weeks tiine.
With our next and successive Saturday’s issue of the Standard will be enclosed a new illustrated supplement, containing the commencement of a most interesting and absorbing tale entitled •’ Mrs Lorimer’s Advertisement," by Bert Ferre., numerous interesting tales and sketches, scientific notes, original and select poetry, domestic receipts, facetiae, agricultural notes, &o. The illustration this week is a life like portrait of the celebrated and beautiful actress, Mrs Langtrv, A young man named Moore, who was committed for trial at Ararat (Victoria) for murder, feigned lunacy in the local gaol. After his committal he became extremely violent, and was placed in a strait jacket, lie rolled about the floor of the cell, spitting at all who came near him. After one of his violent fits he asked for a drink of water, which was given him. He then became quiet, and in a short time died. The inquest showed nothing to indicate insanity.

Altogether the whole affair was a thorough success, and great credit is due to its promoters.

We clip the following from the Auckland Herald “ The Gisborne Gas Company has been successfully floated, and ere another winter sets in, this rising little township will receive the benefits arising from gas being available for illumination and other purposes. Mr Atkinson, of the Auckland Gas Works, has prepared the plans, and will superintend the erection of the works, and the order for the plant has been entrusted to Messrs T. & S. Morrin and Co. We congratulate our Poverty Buy friends on their enterprise. ”
