BOROUGH RECEIPTS AND EXPENDITURE.

(For the Half-year Ending September, 30th, 1883.) The following is a statements of the receipts and expenditure of the Borough for the half-year ending September, 30th 1883. Receipts.

Total, £l,BBB 8 2. It will be seen by the forgoing that the expenditure for the half-year exceeds the uceipta by some £7OO odd, besides an accruing liability of nearly £7OO for outstanding cor .racts. Assuming that the ordinary expenditure for the ensuing halfyear is about equal to the last, minus the Fire Engine Shed, £3OO, Sinking Fund £7OO, and streets £354, it will bring the total liabilities up to about £2OOO. To meet this there in a balance of £1,200 revenue to be collected, and £6OO due from the Harbour Board for wharfs. Thus at the end of the’next halfyear ending March 30th, 1884, providing no further liabilities be incurred the receipts will stand at about £1,734 as against expenditure £1,950—a balance of about £l5O to the bad, Notwithstanding the above indebtedness it will be seen by a reference to the corresponding half-year for 1882 that though the revei! ae has increased this year by some £199 over the corresponding period for 1882, the expenditure shows a diminution of some £33. It will likewise be seen that an extraordinary expenditure of some £350 has been incurred under the head of Fire Brigade which includes erection of a new shed, removal of old one, and custodians residence &c. Taken altogether the financial position of the Borough points forcibly to the fact that the greatest necessity exists for practising the strictest economy with a view to keeping down the expenditure, and that no more contracts be undertaken for the next six months.
