A man named A. Sutherland met with a serious accident on the Fairley Creek railway line. A serious fire broke out at the Corporation Asphalte Works, Courtney Place, yesterday morning, gutting the building in which the concrete blocks are made. The fire originated through the tar boiling over. The damage is estimated at £5OO. This is the third or fourth time the building has been on fire The notices with regard to the sale of Kawhai township will be issued in a few days. BLUFF. The Union Company’s express steamer Takapuna, from Glasgow, via Hobart, passed through the straits this morning. NAPIER. The Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s Show was held on Wednesday and Thursday. The attendance yesterday was remarkably large. The greatest interest was manifested in the jumping and vaulting matches. The number of exhibits compare very favorably with those of previous years Exhibits of sheep were unusually good, more particularly in long-wools and merinos, The cattle exhibits were also uncommonly fine, and excited great adm ? ration. Mr Douglas M'Lean carried off most of the prizes in merinos, as did Messrs Tanner and J. Williams in the long-wools. Messrs Ormond and M'Hardy and tlie Rev. S. Williams were most successful exhibitors. R. D. McLean’s Gazelle won the trotting match, and W. Wilson’s Tichborne won the trotting in harness. The prize for leaping and jumping was awarded to Napuka’s Mangold, though in opinion of many Mr Smith on Fashion, should have been awarded first honors. DUNEDIN. The British King arrived to day, after a passage from Plymouth of 45 days. She bring 509 souls for all ports. Two eases of scarlatina occurred on board, but were pre-I vented from spreading. The Caversham loan of £20,000 has been * floated in London at a oremium of £5OO.
