Cranston, 110 ; extras, 26 ; toaal, 014 for two wickets. The “World” of July 18th writes ;—When one contemplates the monstrous aggregate of 1098 runs made in the three completed and one innings of the Gentlemen v. Players return match, it is difficult to realise that it was the pick of these two elevens which succumbed ignominiously last year to the bowling of the Australians for the meagre total of 77. Or, viewed from the side of the bowling, it is strange that the self-same bowlers, who dismissed the Australians in their first innings for a very small total indeed, and for a by no means large one in the second, should have been so useless to stem the onward career of the batsmen on the present occasion. What the full total would have been had a complete second innings been required from the Gentlemen, it is not easy to say; bnt as Steel and Lucas were well set, and four such bats as Hornby, Tylecote, Ridley, and Wright still remained in reserve, it is likely to nave been something very remarkable indeed. With one match a tie and the return so sensational, the Gentlemen v Players matches of 1883 will remain ever memorable.
