On Saturday last during a most brilliant display of forensic ability, having for its aim the defence of an unworthy and most despicable object, the spectators in the R.M. Court were astonished, and the Bench edified by the graphic portrayal of Gisborne low-life as seen through the blurred lens. of a long beer glass. Amongst the entertaining descriptions calculated to illustrate the low-moral tone which pervades and permeates all things in this town we were given an opinion as to the utter unreliability of all things in general but, in particular, the newspapers and the proceedings of the police, Now with respect to the latter, there can be no possible doubt but what, if we are granted any special favours from the gods by far the greatest blessing that we enjoy is in the efficient, honest, and unprejudiced performance of those onerous duties entrusted in the hands of a meritorious and skilful officer. With respect to the papers it will be sufficient to defend our own “flag.” That many typographical errors occur in a paper working with a small, insufficient, and hard-worked staff is inevitable, and incidental to a small town where two or three papers are struggling for an existence and are compelled to keep expenses down to the lowest possible point. But though we plead guilty to this failing, or fault, we defy any one to charge us with misrepresenting facts, falsifying any reports, being led by any unworthy motive to comment adversely against the weight of evidence, or attempting to defend, bolster up, or plead in favour of any (.person or thing contrary to the dictates of honesty, justice, and truth.
