HARBOUR BOARD..

The usual fortnigW cly meeting of the Harbour Beard took place on Tuesday evening, in the Com noil Chambers. Present ; His Worship, Ev K.. Brown, (in the chair), Members Lewis, T utchen, Hepburn, Brown, Townley and Tuck .er. The new memt -ers, Messrs Kenny and Joyce, then mad e the formal declaration and took their seats at the Board, His Worship remarking that he had great pleasure in welcoMiiiqj Mr Kenny there. The minutes of the previous meeting were then read and confirmed. Correspondence, Outgoing. Letter to a 11. H. Elliot Esq ,re Waiongaruwui Block ; to A. Thompson, re appointment «>f same, as Clerk of Works ; to Collector of Customs,, re landing of goods at wharf; to the Agent cf s.s Company, re shipping ; to W. Smith, Wellington, re Waioiigaruwai Blocks; to Mr Prin, re notice boards contract. Incoming Correspondence. From W. Seed, Esq., Wellington ; from Marine Department, Wellington, re Harbour improvements. Member Lewis proposed that the letters be acknowledged. From D. Johnntone, re landing of goods at wharf; from J. Drummond, /•« notice of dismissal, and asking the reasons for the same. The Chairman thought they should inform Mr Drummond that, as the two bodies were virtu..llj the same, the Harbour Board necc3B<jiily followed the plan adopted by the Borough Council, aud tnat as his services had been dispensed with by the former they followed thu same course. Member Tucker moved, and Member Brown seconded, that Mr Drummond be informed that the Harbour Board followed the precedent of the Burough Council in this matter. Member Tutchen said the Harbour Board had really no comp'aiut to make against Mr Drummond, but ti.u Harbour Board simply followed the Borough Council in the matter. Member Townley followed the same line of argument. The motion of Member Tucker was then put aud carried. Letter from Engineer, re wharf plans, advising that copies of the same be forwarded to Government for their approval, according to law. Member Townley said that the alterations were so small that he did not see the necessity for the action. Member Tutchen thought it too late now as it might seriously affect the contract. The Eugiueer thought it might seriously involve the Board did they not comply with the Marine Act.

Letter from Mr J. Drummond asking for compensation lor extra services rendered in surveying harbor and drawing up plans, &c. Member Lewis wished to know why Mi Drummond asked lor extra payment. Member Townley informed the Board that i.iie plans Had been drawn out for the pur pose of obtaining a breakwater, The Engineer had drawn them up in the due execution of his duty. If any extra payment was required it should have been made at the tune and not after such a lapse of tune. He did not see how the Harbor board could meet this matter. He admitted chat a deal of work bud been done, but he did not think the Harbor Board could be held responsible now. Mr Drummond stated that the work had been done, and if the Harbor Board thought the Borough Council liable he would apply to the Council. Member Tucker moved and Member Lewis seconded, that the Harbor Board decline to entertain the claim.—Carried. Payments, Wharfinger fortnightly ary) £5 ss. Harbor Board Grants. The Secretary infoimed the Board that no answer had been received from All McDonald re the Harbor Board grants. The coir numcation had been made upwards of a inoLvd a u o. Public Works Committee. Member Tutehen moved and Membei Brown seconded, that Member Hepburn be a member of the Public Works Committee. Cai Tied. Member Tucker moved and Membei I’ownley seconded, that Member Joyce be elected a member of the Public Works Committee vice Air Whinray. Alember Joyce graciously declined, ami would suggest Alember Townley on account of his seniority at the Board. Aleinbe. lownley was men duly elected a membe. ,f the Public Works Committee. En gin eer’s Appointment. The Chairman said that it was necessary that the new Engineer (Mr Reynold’s) appo’nt.nent be confirmed. Mem rer Lewis proposed, and Member <emy seconded, that Air Reynolds he ap pointed Eug. to the Harbour Board. Alember lutchen wished to know how much the Haibor.r Board would pay of the £250 a year salary. Tue Chairman said the Harbour Board would pay £5O a year of tlie salary. Member Lewis did not see how they were Lo apportion the salary in that way. The rough minutes having been read, the Board rtsoived it elf ?nco a special meeting of the Borough Council.
