REGISTRAR GENERALS’ REPORT FOR AUGUST.
The Registrar-General’s report on the vital statistics of the principal towns in New Zealand, during the month of August 1883, give the total births 535 as against 552 in July,—a decrease of 17. The deaths in August were 170, an increase of 2 on the number for July. Of the above deaths the males contributed 86, females 84, 61 of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 3588 per cent of the whole number j 46 of these were of children under 1 year of age. The following remarks apply only to the following four principal Boroughs—-Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin j— The births were 296 in August, against 307 in July, a decrease of 11. The deaths in August were 111, against 98 in July, an increase of 13. There were 19 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards males aged 66 j 3 aged 71,76, and 79, and four females of 65, 66, 76 and 77 died at Auckland j 2 males of 67 and 77, and six females of 67, 74, 75, 79, 80 and 90 at Wellington j and two females of 69 and 75 at Dunedin, Lymotic diseases—These diseases caused 19 deaths in August against 17 in July. Of these 19 whooping-cough caused 8, all of children. There were 2 deaths from typhoid fever, both in Wellington. One death occurred from diptheria in Christchurch against 3 in the previous month, and one occurred in each month at Dunedin from the same cause. Constitutional diseases—The number of deaths from these diseases slightly decreased from that in the previous month, although the deaths from phthisis increased from 11 to 13. Local diseases—There was a marked increase in the deaths from these diseases, the numbers having been 47 in July and 56 in August. Diseases of the nervous system were somewhat more fatal, but the number in August included five deaths of children from convulsions. Diseases of the respiratory organs caused 17 deaths in August, against 11 in July.
