THE SALVATION ARMY.

Arrival of Major Barker in Dunedin, The following is »n account written by an eye witness of the scene at the Dunedin Railway Station on the arrival of Major Barker, of the Salvation Army :— Major Barker arrived by train from Invercargill last night, 18th inst. There was a great crowd at the station, and as I was in uniform (having been on duty) and having an idea that trouble was brewing, I judiciously kept out of sight, fearing I might be mistaken for a Salvationist. Major Barker was rushed off the platform by the larrikins, and then a Captain got up and started a hymn, but as soon as he opened his mouth, an egg (a scented one) fell into it, amidst tremendous hooting, yelling and laughing. The procession eventually got a start. The procession had played about three bars, when they were forced by the showers of rotten eggs, flour, ic., to desist. The soldiers then started singing, but were speedily scattered. Major Macrow kept on shouting out " Hallelujah ! God bless you lads I Lets have a good march 1 ” Some of the “ lad ” had pins in the ends of sticks, with which they kept the Major’s horse (a white one—emblem of salvation) in high metal. On reaching the Octagon they pulled the Major off hi. horse, and cut half the horses tail off. Both horse and man were by this pibald with eggs and mud. Major Barker and half-a-dozen Captains were in a cart, and had a very warm time of it.
