On Wednesday last the first meeting of the newly organised Fire Brigade took place, when Mr J Townley was elected Deputy Superintendent. We congratulate the Brigade on performing this act of courtesy, and thus recognising the gentlemanly delicacy shown by Mr Townley, in refusing the appointment when it was offered to him in the Council, stating as his reason, that the Brigade, being a volunteer one, should be permitted to elect their own officers. We most cordially agreed with his remarks, at tWsame time we felt somewhat fearful lest |H town should thus loose the services of a who had been one of the most SgM'zetic and hard working promoters, and been mainly instrumental in the successful formation and organisation of the Brigade. We are highly pleased to see that this fear was unfounded, and that our suggestion has been carried out.
