The annual general meeting of the above society w.»a i uid in tue Good Tempiar’s Hall on baturuay evening. Present: Dr. Poi L-n (in the Chair), Messrs BuL, File, iharratt, C’roll, Good, anu Bently. Tue minutes of the last meeting were read ana confirmed. Tiie Chairman staled that this was the third annual meeting of the Society. Air Tucker (V.ce President) hud sent a communication staling ins regiet at not being able to attend, but assured the meeting of ins sympathy, and that it was his (Air lucker’sj intention to offer some special prizes tins year. Secretaby’s Report. The Secretary then read tue following annual report : — Gisborne, September 12th, 1883. The Committee of tiie Horticuli ural Society have much pleasure iu submitting the aunnxed balance sheet for your approval, and desire to express their thanks to tiie public fur the encouragement given to the efforts of so desirable an institution. The people of Poverty Bay have reason to congratulate tuemselves on tiie success of the Flower Shown that have been held these last 3 years. lhe public hitherto nave r. sponded tolerably, tiie ladies especially by their presence a<. tile shows, and the prizes they have so willingly given for the promotion of Horticulture, and lust, but not least, the exertions of the Committees in the management of the Society, has so far been satisfactory. The balance sheet shows a sum of £lO 10s 2d in hand at the commencement of last years annual meeting ; the amount received for subscribers i ickets, £8 ; casn received fur special prizes, £10; door money and colled ion sale of flowers and vegetables, £lB os, making a total of £l6 los bd Against this prizes amounting to £ZU were given away, and the expenses of management amounted to £l7 16s 9d, : leaving a balance in hand of £8 18s lid. Besides t .e £ZO cash given away in I prizes, there was also several articles of the value of £l5 10s given by our storekeepers, which, in must instances, is better appreciated than cash. The awards wade gave general satisfaction, the judges remarking that difficulties occurred otteu in arriving at a decision, because of the general excellence of the entries. Several items mentioned in the vanrus classes failed to bring fourth compel iturs, and it would be us well to eliminate tiiose exhibits iu our next schedule. I'lie question of expenses in tne management will aiso require careful consideration, and the new Committee would perhaps devise some other untried means of augmenting the funds.

The retiring Committee are eligible For reelcotion, and I should like to see the majority re-elected, success Inis attended their efforts, and hope that this forthcoming season may prove more so. For the Committee, W. L. FILE, Hon. Sec. Balance Sheet. The Secretary then read the balance sheet. Mr Tharratt proposed, and Mr Bushnell seconded, the adoption of the above report and balance sheet. E .ction or Committee. The gentlemen of last year’s Committee were re-e ecced with the exception of Mr Johnstone who retires, and is succeeded by Mr Bushnell. Date or next Show. Air Bull suggested that the Society’s Show be held somewhat earlier this season than it was last, so as to be in time for the roses. After some discussion, it was decided to h >ld this year’s show about the middle of November. A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the proceedings, A Committee meeting of the above Society wai* then held, when Mr Chudly was elected on the Committee. The question of advertising and printing was then gone into, and it was decided iha« the schedules of exhibits remaining over from last year be used, and that intending exhibitors apply to the Secretary for information they may want.
