THE ELECTION.
Early on Thursday morning the friends of the different candidates for municipal honors weie afoot, and large posters were prominently exhibited setting forth the names of Messrs. Joyce, Kenny and Wilson, and “Yankee notions,” in the shape of small cards bearing humorous illustrations, were freely distributed. Buggies were also brought into requisition, and numerous voters eagerly availed themselves of the slight protection these afforded against the bitterly cold wind and rain. In spite of the wet and cold and the tilty state of the roads, as early as 11.50 144 had been recorded, and a large amount of betting was freely indulged in, the general opinion being that Jojce and Smith were sure of a place, while great doubt existed as to the third. At 3 p.m. 255 votes had been recorded, and it became plainly apparent, that Mr Kenny’s friends were ruuking every possible effort to secure his return, whilst Mr Joyce’s were no less energetic. Some heavy aagers were made about this time, and 5 to 1 was freely offered on Joyce and .Smith, whilst Mr Kenny and jyir Nasanth had some warm supporters. At 4 p.m. 148 voters had recorded 29a and at 5 5 182 had recorded 36 L voles. Lua*further business was done, and at 5.30 ou poll stood at 198 voters having exercised 3 x , votes. About four more electors rolled u., and at 5.45 the polling was virtually ove At about a quarter to seven there was a large gathering ontside the polling booth, and much amusement was created by some gentlemen inside Messrs. Ward and Kenny's office posting up various suppositional results of the poll. First, up went a notification to the following effect, “Kenny, 1; Joyce, 2; Smith, 3.” Then another one, “ Wilson, 0; Ihompson, soap and water.” These were received with roars of laughter. The larrikin element now began to show itself, and handfuls of gravel, mud and stones were freely thrown about, but was speedily suppressed by one of the delinquents being summarily dealt with. It was nut until close upon eight o’clock that the Returning Officer opened tbe window and declared the result of the polling to be : — Kenny ... ... ... ... 199 Smith ... ... ... ... 186 Joyce ... ... ... ... U 6 Wilson 98 Hall 91 Nasmith... ... ... ... 91 Tharratt... ... ... ... 70 Thompson ... ... ... 14 Informal ... ... ... 4
The result was received with deafening cheers and Mr Kenny was immediately hoisted on the shoulders of several friends and borne aloft to the verandah of the Albion Club Hotel, where he thanked his friends in a few well-chosen words, which were received with loud hurrahs. Mr Joyce who was received with great applause, next stepped forward, thanking his supporters and invited them round to the British Empire to re-. Joyce with him, —an invitation which a number were not slow to avail themselves of. Mr Hall then warmly thanked the electors who had supported him, and said that though he had not been successful in obtaining a place yet he heartly thanked them for the amount of support which had been afforded him borne expressions of regret were heard that Mr Carlaw Smith had not come forward to say a few words of thanks. A large crowd then escorted Mr Kenny and Joyce round to the British Empire Hotel, where the healths of Mr Kenny and Joyce was proposed accompanied by three hearty cheers and “He’s a jolly good fellow.” Each gentleman responded in suitable terms, and congratulations were showered upon each of them.
