POVERTY BAY V. NAPIER.
A large number of spectators Assembled on the Recreation Ground to witness this match. The game was played in 4 spells of 20 minutes. In the first spell Napier kept the ball well in the Gisborne quarters, St. Hill made a good run but was w all collered by L. Rees. The ball was no w kept in scrimmage, till Wake secured it, and made a good run, passing several of the Gisborne men, he was well collared by Mills, and passed the ball into touch, on be Ing brought out Parker secured it and pass ed it to St, Hill, who mode a good run but was well collared. L. Rees secured a murk, and Bull took a place kick but failed. Berry here made a good run but was well collared by Le Quesne. The ball was now in the Napier quarters. Berry again got it and made another dash, but Gibbon* succeeded in collaring him. A succession of »erimmages now took place till time was called. In the second and third spells Gisborne seemed to play more together, and kept the ball well in th? Napier quarters. Cotterill made some good runs, and Le Quesne kicked well to touch. Berry also ma.de some dashing runs He secured a murk off Wake, but Bull failed in the place kick. Whitcombe also Hecured a mark in the third spell, but Bull again failed. After some scrimmaging, Berry and Robinson got over the line with the ball. Berry got the best of the maul, and scored a try for Gisborne. Bull made a very good kick, but failed to add to the score. In the fourth spell the play was at first pretty even, but Berry securing the ball made a good run and got the ball , well into Gisborne’s quarters. St. Hill secured a mark, but the place kick failed to score. Berry made a good run. and was well collared by Begg. Cotterill also made some good play. Towards the end of the spell Begg secured a try for Napier by good play. Robinson was entrusted with the kick, but failed. The ball was now kept in the scrimmage till time was called, the game ending in a draw, each side having scored a try. For Gisborne—Berry played a grand game, and was well supported by his team. Mills collared well, and Pavitt, L. Hees and Bull all worked wed. For Napier—Begg, St. Hill, Simpson and Cotterill are most worthy of mention.
