The Government have concluded the mail contract with the Orient Company for a fortnightly service of 39 days, commencing with a steamer leaving Melbourne on the 21st Sept. A severe earthquake was experienced at midnight at Kiama seaport, 90 miles south of this city. Dwellings in town and the neighborhood were severely shaken. The Dutch Consul General of this city has received a telegram this morn ing from Admiral Vangough command ing the naval forces in Java, ing the statement that a erruption has occurred in the straits of Sunda, and charts of those seas can —. no longer be relied on. f
