We wish to draw our reader’s special attention to the supplement issued with this morning s paper which contains many articles ef interest, and amongst others one entitled “ Road Metal.” As this is a matter of vast importance to the community we strongly advise our readers to peruse the same. We cannot but admire tho tact of Mr Tutchen, inasmuch as he plainly shows his good sense and discrimination bv coming to us when he wishes to do anything honorable and straightforward, but going to the Herald when he has any dirty work to perform. We are and ever shall be most happy to aid Mr Tutchen in anything that is in. our line—that is the struightfot ward. line. .Seeing this we take it as very unkind of him to go out of his way in defending his friend Mr Rees, to charge us with “imputing impure motives” to that gentleman for signing the requisition to call the public meeting on Saturday night. Mr Tutchen's imagination has led him astray. Would we—would any one—be so wicked, so foolish, as to impute impure motives tn a gentleman of such spotless purity as Mr Tutchen’s friend ? Perish the thought ! We are sorely afraid that Mr Tutchen is in bad hands.

A good etory comes from the Napier Hospital. One of the house servants was disch trged by the matron, and entertaining a feeling of irritation thereat she interviewed the secretary, and on being told that it was no part of his business, she said, “Oh, will, I shall go and speak to Dr Spencer, and then there will be some letters in the newspapers I” A call of sixpence, is notified to have been made payable at the South Pacific Petroleum Company. On next Friday the J Battery will parade far inspection by Major Sheppard, We hope to see a good muster, and which is earnestly requested. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council will be held to morrow evening in the Council Chambers. Want of space compels ua to hold over an article re public meetings. Judge McDonald again embarked on board the Ringarooma yesterday. He will return by Friday’s boat. Hop Bitters does not exhaust and destroy, but restores, cures, and makes new’. Look. It is the misfortune of every traveller in Australia (writes Mr Archibald Forbes in the “Sydney Morning Herald”) to have forced on his notice the foul expressions and revolting oaths which the Australians of the lower orders habitually disfigure their conversation. Americans swear “ considerable tall,” but there rhe lowest American bridles his tongue when women are within hearing, and gives practical effect to the aphorism, Maxima reverentia debetur pue.ris, The foulmouthed Australian, it is painfully evident, has neither regard for women nor reverence for children. It seems to me this is the loathsomcst stain on the colonial escutcheon.

Here’s a Dutchman wants to speck ter yer.” Even the ‘London Times’ occasionally falls into an error, as witness the following paragraph from a recent issue:—“A telegram has been received in Durham announcing the death by accident of Professor Walker, who recently accepted a professorship in Adelaide University, New Zealand.” Miss Louise Pomeroy, the well-known, actress, has been married at Sandhurst, Victoria, to Mr Arthur Elliott, also well known as an actor throughout the Colonies. At the Wallsend (N.S.W.) Municipal Council, a disgraceful row occurred the Mayor knocking Aiderman Own down I amongst the chairs. An action resulted, , and the Mayor was fined £2. MacSawney, in the most Scottish part of a Scotch New Zealand province, used in the old time (writes “.Egles,” in the ‘Australian ’) to run a news; apsr and an almanac. It was his pride and boast that he could travel the province canvassing and collecting at lest cost than any other living man. His plan was detected by a jealous rival. MacS. started with a capital of sixpence worth of lollies in his pocket, and about roosting-time would “happen on” a farmhouse. The good folk would put his horse up, and so soon as he had achieved admittance to the house asked for “the bairns.” If there were any (as was general!}' the case) he produced his sweetstull, and affected so deep an interest in the little ones that he was invited to partake of pot-hick and to stay the night. In the morning, from the good wife it was, “Jeannis, hurry the breakfast, as Mr MacS. wants to start early.” “Jock, you polish the gentleman s boots, and give them a good shine.
