RAPACIOUS CRICKETERS.
Wa clip the following from the ‘ World “ I have scarcely met with anything more unsportsmanlike than the conduct of our friends the Australian cricketers. The result of the visit of 1882, as I have previously informed my readers, was that each player, his return, received some £7L'O as his 4Bbare of the pecuniary profit of the trip. jDne would, in all conscience, think such a turn enough in itself, without taking into ■^cjnsidera'ion the other advantages of tig journey. But no! our Australian cousins have cast an avaricious eye upon the income derived from the private stands of cricket grounds whereon they played, and insist that, if they come to England in 1884, such takings sh*ll be divided with them, the same as are the ordinary receipts. Nothing but contempt can be expressed for such rapacity ; and it is highly gratifying to fir-d th»t our cricket authorities have very decis. ively refused to entertain the suggestion. It is difficult to reconcile the position of a gentleman cricketer with that of a haggler over ‘ gate-money.’ ”
