ELECTRIC HANDS.
The New Zealand Tinies contains the following reference to the transmistnission of the Public Works Statement: —On the Napier circuit Mr Kivell sent Mr Dean 1,756 words, at an average of 39.91 words per minnte ; Mr Murray, 1,776 words to Mr Poole, averaging 39 words; and Mr Tait to Mr Ashton, 1,687 words, an average of 33 74. On the Blenheim circuit Mr Storey sent 1,756 words to Mr Treweek at an average of 39.47 per minute ; Mr Halliday, 1,687 words to Mr Hawke, averaging 35.89 per minute, and Mr Talbot to Mr Cross, 1,776 words, average, 35.88. The mean average for the six operators was no less than 27.01 words per minute —a performance of unusual excellence. It may also be recorded that on No. 1 wire, Mr Beale sent 2,066 words to Mr Ward, averaging 35.82 words per minute. Two wires were used to Wanganui, and the Statement was finished to that stati.m at 9.2 p.m. The salaries paid to these efficient officers seems to us to be barely sufficient remuneration for the skill brought into play, and the long hours of work required.
