DEATH OF ARCHBISHOP VAUGHAN D.D., O.S.B.
The sudden death is announced at Liverpool of the Most Rev. Roger Bede Vaughan, D.D., 0.5.8., Archbishop of Sydney. The deceased prelate and distinguished scholar, who has just been on an official visit to Rome, is the second son of LieutenantColonel Vaughan, and brother of the Bishop of Salford, was born on the 9th of January, 1834, at Courtfield, near Ross, Herefordshire, was educated at Downside College, near Bath, and at Rome. He became a Clerk regular of the Benedictine Order, was appointed Professor of Metal Philosophy at the Benedictine Gymnasiam, of St. Michael, near Belmont, Hereford, in 1861, and the year after was appointed Principal of the same Priory of St. Michael, under the title of Cathedral Prior, of Newport and Meneria. Having been nominated by the Pope Coajutor, Archbishop of Sydney, Australia, with the title of Archbishop of Magiangas, i.p.i., he was consecrated by the present Cardinal Archbishop of Westminister, in the Church of St. Vincent de Paul, Liverpool, March 19, 1873. Archbishop Vaughan, who is an eloquent and powerful preacher, has acquired a high literary reputation by his “ Life and Labours of St. Thomas, Aquin,” 2 vols., 1871-2. He has published “Views on Catholic Education,” “ Ecclesia Christi: words spoken at the opening of the second session of the Fourth Provincial Council of Westminister,” 1873, and contributed to various Catholic periodicals.
