LAST NIGHT'S WIRES.
(FfiOM OUR OWX COBRISPONDBXT,) WELLINGTON. Two "freshl eases of typhoid fever have broken out among the arrivals by the ship Oxford, one on board the ship, and the other among the immigrants. The initial retorting in connection with the crushing of quaftz at Terawhiti is expected to take place towards the end of the week. Great interest is evinced in the mult. DUNEDIN. A fire occurred last night in Manse street, in a large wcoden building occupied by McLean & Co., auctioneers, the upper story of which is occupied by various offices. The fire occurred through cne of the holders of the upper rooms letting full a kerosene lamp, With which he was looking to see if all was safe for the night. The upper story was pretty thoroughly gutted, and a quantity of wheat on the lower floor was damaged by water. The insurances are as follows :—On the building, the property of Messrs D. Proudfoot and P. J, Larnach, £lOOO in the National (probable loss £400) ; on Mr Isaacs stock, £2,500 in the National office, (probable loss £390) ; on the grain £lOO in the National office, (probable loss £200) ; on Mr Harborrow’s stock, £2OO in the London and Lancashire offices (probable loss £500). Besider these losses there are various amounts lost by office-holders who not were insured. At the Gaol enquiry, Caldwell, the former gaoler, gave evidence denying he had ever encouraged the system of spying in the gaol, or had illtreated the prisoners in any way. He had never any other view than to serve Government faithfully, and he had injured his health in the service. His counsel asked him, “ Have you ever wilfully committed any irregularity ?” to which he answered, <* No.” He also gave instructions to officers to show Capt Hume every respect. Fully 300 persons, young and old, are expected to don the Bine Ribbon as the result of the crusade now being carried on here. At the Roslyn Tramway Company’s annual meeting yesterday, the profit for the year was shewn at £6BO, which has been carried to the Accident Fund, otherwise a dividend of 10 per cent, would have been declared. WANGANUI. At the R.M. Court, John Notman, a well known and respected financial agent, and old resident of this town, was charged by Mrs. Clara Rankin with stealing a five pound note and a gold locket from her dwelling house. The evidence and surrounding circumstances pointed to the case having been trumped up on a prearranged plan, and to be utterly unfounded. Mr. Ward, R.M., dismissed the information without calling on the defence, on the ground that no jury would be satisfied with the creditability of the prosecution.
