SPORTING.

In this morning’s issue will be seen Ada Mantua’s advertisement on the Melbourne Cup, which has been altered. Ada will supply this journal with the names and addresses of the six principal winners, but not for publication. A number of people assembled on the beach on Saturday afternoon, to witness a meeting which had been arranged between Mr. J. White’s Lady Bristol and Dr. H. Pollen’s Glenfern. A number of others wishing to join in the sport, it was decided to open the race to all comers, the following being the entries Sunderland’s Maccaroni, Dr. Pollen’s Glenfern, Sherratt’s Ada, White’s Lady Bristol, Adams’ Midlothian, Paterson’s Sailor, Dobbie’s Rob Roy, and C. Bourke’s The Moor. The conditions were—entrance fee 10a, distance three-quarters of a mile, winner to take total amount. The horses were despatched by Mr. Nolan, who acted as starter, aud got away tolerably well together, in which order they continued for about half the distance, when The Moor, Lady Bristol, and Midlothian forged ahead, and as they neared the winning post it was seen that the victory lay between The Moor and Lady Bristol. The Moor, who was ridden by his owner, eventually proved the victor in a good race by half a length from Lady Bristol, Maccaroni being a bad third.
