Rather a big mistake occurred in our Court report last issue In the case Rees and others v. M. J. Gannon, the claim was for L 5 odd, and not L 56 as reported. Gardeners and others can obtain vegetable seeds and seed patatoes at Walter Knights,’ as a large and well-assorted stock is now on hand. Henry Clinton Salkeld Baddeley, Esq., has been appointed RM., for the districts of Ashburton and Geraldine, with extended jurisdiction to £lOO ; and to be a R.M. for the district of Christchurch, with jurisdic tionof £2O, viceM. Price, Esq., deceased, Tho Manager of the South Pacific Petroleum Company calls for tenders in another column for 100 cords of firewood, to be delivered at the derrick. Word was received to-day by the local manager of the South Pacific Petroleum Company, from Sydney, to the effect that most likely the new engine and boiler will be shipped this week. If so, its arrival may be looked for shortly. At the request of a number of our country subscribers, we intend publishing a weekly report of the Auckland markets, commencing with the present sheet, and continued in every Saturday’s issue. The following bonuses on Colonial industries have been offered by the Government of New Zealand, and will be paid on the production in the Colony of New Zealand, of any of the undermentioned articles—“ A bonus of 50 per cent on the value realised for the first £lOOO worth of the cocoons of the silkworm, or silkworms’ eggs, produced in the colony, to be paid on quantity, if not less than £5O nor more than £lOO produced by any one person, A bonus of £5OO for the first £2500 worth of manganeisen, and a similar bonus for a like amount of maganese bronze produced in the colony from New Zealand ores, and silk at a fair market pricey in a foreign market. A bonus of £3OO wil be given for the first £l5OO worth of New Zealand marble exported from the colony, and sold in foreign market at a price of not less than 9s per cubic foot- A bonus of £5OO will be given to the first £250 tons of antimony reguls, produced in the colony from New Zealand ores, and sold at fair price in a foreign market. A bonus of £lOOO for a production in New Zealand, by a direct process of 200 tons of “ iron blooms ” of marketable value from ore produced in New Zealand. A prize type-setting contest took place recently at Berlin, where the winning compositor set 9,415 letters in the course of three hours, an average of about 53 letters per minute, in ordinary newspaper type. There are (says the Auckland “Star”) reasons to believe that Detective Hughes has been compvll-.-d t-j proc •cd on a trip to Gisborne against his own free will, ana not oven on business connected with the department. He was below in performance of his official duties when the steamer left the wharf, and, as there was no stoppage on the way down the harbour, it is believed that he has been carried on to the first port of call. There is, however, just a possibility that he may have been landed on the pilot schooner, or some incoming vessel outside. Here is an incident, vouched for and authenticated, which may find a place in the biography of a great man. At half-past ten on the morning of the 11th April a shop-boy was on a ladder cleaning a widow. He dropped his duster. A passer-by stopped, picked it up, and handed it to the lad. The passer-by was the Right Hon, William Ewart Gladstone, Prime Minister of England. . . If that shop-boy dosen’t preserve the duster, and hand it down to his descendants, he dosen’t know when he has a good thing.—Referee, On reference to our advertising columns it will be seen that Mr D. M. Orr has again commenced business in temporary premises at Mr Green’s auction mart, where he will be glad to execute orders for cash only, and will receive payment for all outstanding accounts. We sincerely wish that fortune may now smile on Mr Orr, and that success may crown his energetic endeavors and make ample amends for the past. The time for receiving tenders for building a ferry punt is extended until Saturday, the 18th, at noon. Plans will be on view on and after Saturday, the 11th instant. A working model of Heartshorn’s self acting blind can be seen at Mr A. G. Croll’s, agent for the sale of the same. Last night the Seraphic Quadrille Assembly passed another enjoyable evening at the Academy of Music. Professor C. F. Liohtwart, the celebrated colonial horseman, will deliver a free lectnre on the Scientific Management of the Horse, at the Academy of Music, on Thursdoy, 9th August, when all those who are interested in that noble animal are invited to attend.
