SHOOTING OF CAREY.

The shooting of the Phoenix Park murderer and informer .Tames Carey, On board the steamer Melrose in Port Elizabeth, Cape Colony, is an event which we quite think has taken no one by surprise. Knowing the impulsive and inflammable Irish character, and ths intense hatred the Irish as a nation bear to an informer, we cannot wonder at this result. We have no doubt the killing was not in this case the outcome of a sudden impulse, but of stern and deadly determination carefully and deliberately planned. In all probability the man O'Donnell, who shot him, was told off by some secret society, who looked upon the killing of Carey as a just and necessary act of retribution. Seldom is it that people can hear without horror of so sudden a deed of death, but truth compels us to say that in this particular instance our sympathies are more with the slayer than the slain. On Carey's head rested not only the awful guilt of planning and carrying out the wilful and bloody murder of two good and inoffensive men, but also the detestable and repulsive stain of cowardly treachery. To us it was a foregone conclusion that he would bo killed r.s soon as he was out of the reach of the protecting arm of the English law, and despite our horror of the crime of murder, we cannot say that we are sorry for the death of James Carey.— “ Pacts.”
