J BATTERY.
The usual monthly inspection of the J Battery Volunteers took place last Thursday evening, by Captain Porter, the Officer Commanding the District. A full muster of the Corps paraded at 7 p.m., and were put through several evolutions by Sergt. Ledger, and afterwards by Lieut. U’Rcn. At 7.30 Captain Porter inspected the Battery, and expressed himself satisfied with the general appearance of the men. He highly complimented Capt, Winter for the state of efficiency to which he had brought the men, and stated that during his visit to Napier and Wellington, he hud been present at the various Battery drills, and certainly thought the J Battery would compare favorably with any of them, both for drill, general appearance, and in uumbere. Capt. Porter also stated that he had inter-* viewed the Defence Minister, who had grunted t ic Corps permission to use the paddock in the rear of the Government Buildings as a drill ground. The Government would also grant £75 towards the erection of a drillshed. Captain Porter said this was u great favor, as the Government were not us a rule assisting in such matters. The Battery could now have u very good drill room built ul a small cost to themselves, and he (Captain Porter) thought the work could bo pushed on at once, and have the shed ready by the next monthly inspection. Capt. Porter stated with reference to fines inflicted on members of the Battery, that he had instructed Capt. Winter to recover them at once, by law if necessary, and that in future he would strictly enforce the fines. The parade was then put through various field movements, and the men acquitted themselves well. After the parade was dismissed, the Band played several new marching tunes in a very creditable manner.
