GISBORNE HARBOR BOARD.

The usual meeting of the Harbor Board was hold in the Council Chambers on Monday evening. Present, His Worship the Mayor (E, K- Brown, Esq.) in the chair, Messrs Lewis, Brown, Hepburn, Smith, Whinray Chrisp and Tucker, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Wharf Tenders. The Chairman stated that Messrs Wells and Gardiner having completed the conditions required satisfactorily, their tender had been accepted. Outgoing Correspondence. A telegram which had been sent to Captain Porter was read, re the Harbor Board grant. A telegram sent to Government re the same was also read. A telegram was next read from Captain Porter, stating that he had seen the Minister at Wellington, and that Shelton and Co, having failed, the grants would be at once prepared and forwarded. Payments. N.Z. Times, 18s. advertisement for tenders; Wharfinger’s salary, £5 ss. By-laws. The by-laws were read, and various alterations made, when Messrs Tucker and Chrisp were deputed to sign them. Extraordinary Business. Mr Lewis called attention to the necessity for placing lights on the beacons, and moved tliat lights be placed on the same at once. Mr Chrisp had no objection to the motion, but he thought the matter had better be well looked into before deciding. The matter was left over for next meeting. Mr Tucker’s Motion. Ho wished to know whether a perfectly solvent contractor was to be allowed to transfer a contract, providing he found it did not pay, to another person, who might be a man of straw. On the request of Mr Whinray, the question was adjourned till next meeting. Notices of Motion. Mr Lewis gave notice that he would, next meeting, move that lights be placed by this Board on the beacons, so as to facilitate the passage of boats over the bar at nights.
