PUBLIC THANKS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I have every hope that you will afford me space in your columns to express my most sincere thanks, and offer my grateful acknowledgments for the kindness which has been shown and the sympathy evinced for me in my great troubles by the good people of Gisborne since I arrived here. If anything could have softened the bitterness of my grief and lightened the burden of my sorrows it would have been the tender manner I have been treated in this kind-hear ted town ; but what can relieve a mind racked as mine it ? To be deserted by my husband was bad ; to find

him living with another female as his wife is much worse ; still there might have been forgiveness even for those two great sins. But what forgiveness can there be for a man who is so foul as to attempt to blacken his wife’s character? who challenges her marriage certificate; who v ould, had he been able, have challenged the faith and purity due from a wife to Lri husband. I thank God for His great mercy that I have been permitted to prove the base falseness of his slanderous statements and wicked insinuations. May the Merciful Father in Heaven pardon him for all the wrongs he has done me. As an outraged wife I cannot do this myself, for the children I have borne to him would not permit- me I came here with but scant means, and leave with means more scant, for where my children live. My sorrows will be with me until I descend to the grave : but my thanks for the kindness shewn me here will ever be to me as a ray of sunshine breaking through a dark cloud.— I am, &c, Jane A. E.
