RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.—GISBORNE.
[Before J. Booth, Esq., R.M.j Satubday, July 7. Pkohibitiow Obdeh, At the instance of Dr. Pollen, a prohibition order was issued against A. F. Hardy. Wirn Desebtion. S. J. Bromley was brought up and charged with deserting his wife, Mary Anne Jane Bromley. Mr. Brassey and Mr. Robinson appeared for the defendant, and Mr. Kenny for prosecutrix. Mr. Brassey asked for a remand, having only been'instructed yesterday, The case was one of great importance, and with the consent of Mr. Kenny, he would ask for an adjournment until next Wednesday. Mr. Kenny agreed to this course, providing good sureties were given for Bromley's appearance. His own recognisances were perfectly worthless. Mr. Brassey said the Magistrate in Auckland had thought Bromley's own recognisances were quite sufficient. He had come back here where he had a business of his own, and it was most unlikely that he would decamp. Mr. Kenny said that nothing was certain with the prisonor. The reason why the Auckland Magistrate had liberated Bromley on his own recognisances was that no warrant had arrived in Auckland. Mr. Kenny further argued that a charge of bigamy might be brought against him. He strongly urged that the recognisances should be substantial. His Worship agreed with Mr. Kenny. The charge was a most grave one. He would adjourn it until 10 o'clock on Wednesday next, and would admit the defendant to bail in two sureties of £5O each and himself in £lOO. The two sureties were Mr. Fryer and Townley.
