(from our own correspondent.) NAPIER, Wednesday. At the Supreme Court, on Tuesday, John Christie, charged with perjury, was found not guilty. The charges of a similar nature Against Reilly and Seymour, were accordingly dismissed. A telegraphic match took place between the Blenheiu and Napier operators, in receiving the Public Works Statement, in which the Napier men proved the victors by a word a minute. Three men received the whole of the statement in 45 minutes, or at an average of over .37 words a minute each. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. It is announced that a rich reef, four feet thick, hae been struck in the Golden Crown claim at goldfield. Shares have risen from 4s to 17® 6d, and considerable ex* citement prevails. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt on Wednesday morning. A nine-roomed house at Oreore station, near Masterton, was destroyed by fire on Tuesday. Nothing was saved. Mr Thomson barely escaped with his life. The sixth annual meeting of the Union Insurance Company held on Tuesday, a dividend of ten per cent, Was declared, £lO,OOO was carried to the reserve fund, and £9,000 was carried forward to next ypar: J. It was reported on Monday that two men named Tonghey and Welsh were drowned whilst bathing at Kaipara. The officers and men who took part in ths Russian war, in 1854-55, intend to hold a dinner on the Anniversary of the fall of Sebastopol. The Committee of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, intend holding an exhibition chess match, being represented by ladies and gsntlemen, in aid of the fund to defray cost. The new lower City Council finally re* solved on a £200,000 loan for a water supply, drainage, etc, The decision is subject to a poll. At the local meeting of the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, the Chairman congratulated the Company on the prosperous condition of the Colony and bus! ness of the Company. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. At the goal enquiry on Monday, evidence was generally favorable in the management of the gaol under Caldwell. At the Supreme Court, the jury’ found a true bill against Frederick Wain and his wife, for manslaughter. CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday. Groat surprise and indignation is expressed at the action of two members of the Woodend Licensing Committee in sanctioning the i opening of the Royal Hotel, which was | closed by order of the Committee some time ago. A man aged 68 fell down exhausted from starvation, whilst on his way to th® hospital. It required energetic treatment to rally him. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce it was resolved, “That this Chamber, believing the proposed Bankruptcy Bill will be a great improvement on the existing Act, expresses hope that the Canterbury members will use their influence in securing the passing of the Bill during the present session.
