DEPARTURES.

June. 28th—-Southern Cross, Hansby, for Auckland. 29th—Wairarapa, Chatfield, for South. Passengers—Mieses Barrie and Floyd, Mrs Roe, Sir J. Prendergast, Messrs. Fraser, Appleby, Richardson, Meyers, Knight, and Stanfield and Dark’s Company. The ■>>. Southern Cross arrived at daylight on Thursday morning from Napier. She left the same evening for North. The U, S. S. Co.’s Wairarapa arrived in the Bav yesterday morning from Auckland, and left in the afternoon for the South. As instancing the advantage of the direct steam line, we (Press) may point out that the Orient steamer Chimborazo left Plymouth on 21st April, seven days prior to the departure of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s s.s. lonic. The former arrived at Melbourne on 3rd June, after a passage of 43 days, and through passengers by that steamer are only now due at the Bluff in the Tarawera. The s.s. lonic left Plymouth on 28th April, called at Teneriffe, where she spent 16 hours in coaling, signalled off the Cape of Good Hope on 20th May, and arrived at Wellington at midnight on 11th inst., making the passage in 43 days 22 hours, or only 22 hours longer than the Chimborazo’s passage to Melbourne. The lonic’s actual steaming time was 43 days six hours. There will be no host in on Sunday as usual, from Melbourne and Southern Ports, •he will pass on for Auckland direct. The Taiaroa may be expected here on Wednesday from South, whence she will sail for Auckland.
