COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.
Juxb 21st. A MEETING of the County Council was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening. Present : Crs Gannon and Allanaeh. There not being a sufficient number of Councillors present, the ordinary business of. the Council was not gone into. A deputation, consisting of the Mayor (Mr E. K. Brown) and Borough Councillor Townley was received by the above-named County Councillors. His Worship stated that the object of the deputation was to arrange the terms of application for the loan under the Roads and Bridges Construction Aet, for the proposed erection of the bridge across the Turanganui river.
After some discussion, His Worship handed in the following conditions under which the Borough Council were willing to co-operate with the County Council—at the same time remarking that he should greatly regret to see the thing fall through. : “The Borough Council is agreeable to apply conjointly with the County Council, but wish it to be distinctly understood, so as to avoid any misunderstanding in future, that the Borough Council will not hold itself responsible for more than half of the cost of construction uud maintenance of the bridge. ” After discussing several points in connection with the subject, it was agreed that each Council apply separately for £2OOO for the joint purpose of constructing the bridge, each Council to pay its fourth part of the sum received out of a special rate to be levied on all property in the County and Borough.
