The Common, Shelton question has been so long and frequently before the public, and so much has been said and written about it, that it would seem almost superfluous to again open up the subject. But not until the matter is settled justly and fairly can we, as guardians of the public interest, let it rest. The trickery, the
venality, the corruption, the falsity, the : lying and the bluster which has been resorted to to bolster up this preposterous claim is not the least convincing proof of its illegality and unsoundness. To attempt to enter into the question in order to show the falseness or otherwise of this claim would only be an insult to the most ordinary intelligence. What our object now is is to draw the attention of the electors and ratepayers I to the shallow artifices and dodgery of those men who, in the guise of publid repre- 1 senHtives, prostitute tbeir *nd lend themselves to the enemies of thos<* very interests they falsely pretend to guard. Let nur readers and patrons 1 ok closely i»Lo the reports of our public bodies and meetings which shall be— as far as we are c3hcerm?d, and a# Mr as in us lies—a fair and truthful summary of the sayings and doings of all, let them he friends or foes. Too long has venality held its iron heel on the throat of truth, and raising its own voied instead, has brayed aloud false, lying and corrupt information, clothed in such flimsy dressing that ©Very ordinarily intelligent person could see the grinning monster Falsity, within. When our Harb or Board “delayed” grants are confirmed, and the Board in full possession of all it? a powers, then we shall be content to let the matter rest in the hands of the majok'ity of our faithful and true Town Councillors.
