In another column we publish a letter from a correspondent signing him self “ Civis,” re the Hospital. The writer asserts that, in numerous instances, subscriptions are withheld by many on account of the dissatisfaction they feel at the manner in which the affairs of the institution are managed. We asiree that there is plenty of room for improvement. No one who haany personal interest in, or derives any profit from, the institution, direct or indirect —let it be ever so remote —should be permitted a seat on the committee or any voice in the man agement whatever. At the next election we trust to see more discrimina tion exercised in this respect At the same time we would strongly advise t*>at all doctors and ministers be made hon. members We also think that the publication of a monthly list of subscriptions would be not alone of great benefit to the institution in a pecuniary sense, but would also enable the public to see that many of those who are accumulating wealth and living in luxury by the very vices and weaknesses which send many a poor wretch to seek the aid of this institution, refuse to contribute the smallest sum towards the relief of their victims. Taking into consideration many facts in connection with it, it is really a matter of surprise to us that the hospital affairs are even in such a good position as they are at present; at the same time, we sincerely trust that those who are able to give will in no wise withhold their donations, seeing that the good so largely predominates over the evil, and remembering the duty they owe to them selves, their fellow-man, and to Him who said “He that giveth to the poor lendeth to the Lord,” will give and give freely.
