HARE AND HOUNDS.

The second meet of the Dunedin Normal and District Schools Hare and Hounds took place on Saturday, and, in spite of the boisterous weather, was even more successful then the previous one, A start was made from Pelichet Bay at 8.45 a.m. The hares were allowed 8 minutes’ start, and made the most of their time, for when first sighted they had put fully a mile of up-hill country between themselves and the hounds. The course along the top of Signal Hill was very rough, and here the honnds lost scent for fully five minutes. From Signal Hill the hares made through the bush towards St. Leonards. Shortly before reaching the last mentioned place a halt had to be made in order to extricate a hound out of four feet of mud. The hares were next sighted about seventy yards ahead, full of running, on the road to Ravensbourne, and from this point the run was a splendid one, the hares ultimately reaching home 20 yards in advance of the foremost hounds. It is the intention of the Committee to make arrangements for holding a hunt once every three weeks. [Could not our School authorities start something of this sort.]
