Gallagher, an American, one of the men recently arrested here on the charge of being in the unlawful poseeesion of dynamite, and remanded until Thursday, has appealed to the Hon. Russell Lowell, the American Minister, for the protection of the United States Government.
In the House of Commons last night, Mr A. Brogden, M.P. for Wedneabury, gave notice of a resolution regarding the Native question in New Zealand, and especially the treatment of Te Whiti.
Intelligence is to hand from Tonquin that hostilities have broken out between the French troops and Animites, and engage ment have already been fought. The diplomatic relations between France and the Kingdom of Anam has been broken off, and the French Minister at Hue has left his post in consequence of the outbreak of the war.
The French, English, and other naval squadrons, now stationed at Hong Kong, are proceeding without delay to Tonquin. The trial of the prisoner Brady continues at Dublin. The informers, Carey and Farrell, under examination yesterday, repeated the evidence they gave at the Police Court. The Crown Prosecutor promised that corroborative evidence would shortly be adduced to prove the assassination of Lord Cavendish and Mr Burke by the prisoners. The Dublin National League has now received altogether £5OOO from Australia. In a recent communication, Mr Redmond reports that the alleged connection of the League with the nhcenix Park murders, and the recent news of the dynamite conspiracies seriously prejudiced the success of his mission to the Colonies. April 12. In the trial of Brady at Dublin, to-day, the informers Carey and Farrell were cross-ex-amined at length, buttheir previous evidence as to Brady’s guilt was in no wav shaken. The photograph of “Number One” was identified in Court to-day by Carey and Farrell. The six men—Norman, Wilson, Gallagher, Dalton, Ausburgh, and Kurton—who were recently arrested in London, were again brought up at the Bow-street Police Court to-day, charged with being in unlawful possession of explosives, and conspiracy te commit outrages. Mr Poland, in his opening speech for the prosecution, showed that the prisoners were connected with the Whitehead factory, recently seized at Birmingham. I the House of Commons, Sir Henry James, Attorney-Generai, announced that the Affirmation in Lieu of Oaths Bills, which was about to be tabled, was only intended to apply to future members of the House, and would not be retrospective.
