Court on Tuesday morning last I preserved a most disgraceful appearance, th** so its ami table peing covered with dust. A little mure attention paid by the custodian ! to the requirements of the gentlemen of the bar would relieve them of the trouble of ! dusting their several locations, by means of . their coat sleeves and pantaloons, to say nothing of coat tails. The Service af Song on Tuesday evening last was well attended, and (he choir, under Mr .1. Witty's instruction, gave proof of the 1 careful control exercised by the conductor. 1 I'he sopranos were in excellent accord, but 1 the tenors were on several occasions astray. ■ With a little inorc attention, improvement con id be made, as although Mr Witty, indi- ’ viduully, has been indefatigable in his efforts . there are some members who should have J paid more attention to the instructions given. At the R. M. Court on Tuesday morning, before His Worship the Mayor and A McDonald. Esq., the following eases were heard H. McClutchcy v. A. J. Jury, claim £5, jiulgin* nt for plaintiff : D. McCarthy v. H. A. Downe, claim £5 15s, adjourned to 10th April. Yesterday mo ning there was only one ease heard before His Worship the Mayor and W. Common, E-»q , viz.-.—G. J. W inter v. W. C. Walsh. The defendant was charged with a breach of by-law No. 0, section 4of the Cook County Council, by allowing his cattle to stray into the drains <m the main road, near his premises, and doing considerable damage thereto. Defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined. U’i, with the costs of Court Us. j On Tuesday evening Mr Chas. Davis, arrived overland from Napier with 2,600 sheep for Sir George Whitmore’s run at ; Waiapu. Messrs Car’aw and Co, will ftell by auction on Friday, at noon, several articles, , seized under distress warrant, at the Gia- i borne Brewery, Lowe-street. The advertise- ‘ ment sets forth the particulars. A meeting of the creditors in George Burnand’a estate, is advertised to be held at Mesars Carlaw Smith and Co.’s offices, on ; Friday at 2 p.m. A cheque for C2B Is, signed by Mr H. i Eliison, in favor of Messrs Reardun and O’Ryan, has been lost, and all persons are , cautioned against negotiating the same. The: adjourned meeting of the Coursing Club Will be held at the Roseland Hotel; on Friday evening next. By inadvertence and the omission of certain words relative to the landing of the hurdle racer Wild Dayrell, blame was imputed (or rather implied) to Messrs Kennedy and iknnvtt. Now, as a mutter of fact, these gentlemen must be altogether exonerated. 'l’he cruelty to the horse would have been very much greater had Capt Kennedy tackled the bar, ami we regret that a mistake relative to its detention should have been permitted to creep into our columns. On Friday and Saturday, t-e ffih and 7th of April, the postponed dramatic entertainment entitled “ I'he Mariner s Compass,” with special realistic scenery and effects, painted and ananged by Mr Neville H. Thornton, will be presented. The synopsis of scenery, us published in our advertising ; colu.nn, gives proof that the mounting of i lha play will lack in nothing, whilst the cast j gives evidence that the drama will be reprei aented as it should be. In addition it may • not be out of place to mention that the euI tertaimnent, subject to certain necessary deI ductious, is for the benefit of the Fire i Brigade. The object is good, the performi ance is sure to be good, and the attendance 1 should be ditto. Messrs Percy (Chief Surveyor), Barnard i (Inspector of Surveys), and W. Gray, left I yesterday for Waiapu, and several other , gentlemen are likely, so it is stated, to fol- ’ low to-day. The object has not yet leaked I out, but we. have an inkling of it, and when i the facts have been ascertained wc will lose no time in placing our readers in full posses- ( siun of them. ' Mr.lames W. Witty advertises that his reading on “John B. Gough,” the great apostle of temperance, is unavoidably postponed for about three weeks. Holders of tickets are requested to retain them, as they will be available when the reading is given. As will be seen by advertisement Messrs Johnstone and Direy, general commission agents have dissolved partnership. Mr Johnstone will liquidate all debts due by the late firm, but we have been given to understand in future the business will be solely j conducted by Mr Direy, in the former prej mises, Lowc-street. ' High revelry was held at Patutahi on Tuesday evening, on the occasion of the ball in aid of the bunding fund. Where each and all worked well, and did their utmost to render the affair a success, it would be invidious to mention names, but we certainly must accord a special meed of praise to Mr A. Sawyer, who acted as M C., and to Mr J. T. Crawford, who discoursed most danceable, music to the delight of all present. Several ladies and gentlemen took a lively interest in the affair which must be pronounced a decide*]. success. We must not omit to mention the choice floral ornamentations, and the special feature of Chinese lanterns which added greatly to the Mr L. Stevens as caterer gave every satisfaction. We trust that this is but one of very many enjoyable re-unions yet to take place. Mr O’Ryan, of the firm of Messrs Reardon and O’Ryan, a few days ago discovered in the Mata River tho skull of a wild boar, j from which he extracted an enormous tusk, measuring ten inches in length. Ami eur- ' ving until it formed about 5-fichs of a circle • Tho brute to which this belonged must have ! been a patriarch, if not a monarch, ami ongst his species.
The travelling public have good cause for complaint against Mr Uxcnhain who appears to be utterly callous as to the danger to life and limb, he renders probable by his negligence. Between Read’s gate and the town there is a truck which has been permitted to remain on the right hand side of the road leading to Makaraka, which not alone frightens horses, but is calculated to cause a serious accident. Some notice of this should be at onue taken. Should it not be, and a fatal accident occur, a verdict of manslaughter will prouably be returned against the person, or persons, who should have seen to it, /I boating party on Easter Monday were induced to put forth their mu-cle, and strain every nerve, to escape imminent danger. They had been pulling leisurely along, when two bullets whistled over their heads, lodging in the bank on the Whataupoko side ot the river. The position of the range is dangerous, because if a. bullet misses the target it will, in all probability, cither cross or tall in the river. Something should be done to havo the present line of fire altered. Mails for Napier and South, pers.s. Southern Cross, will close this (Thursday) evening, at 7 o’clock. We have been favored with a copy of the Education Report for the Hawke’s Bay District, 1882, which has been evidently most carefully prepared. We are pleased to see that the Gisborne school is most favorably reported of by the Inspector, in fact more *o than any other. It shows that there are 340 on the roll, 311 of whom were present at the examination. The condition of the building is put down as generally good, ventilation go <l, grounds too small, conveniences satisf ictory, registers unci timetable satisfactory, organisation and discipline very good, neatness of children highly commendable, moral tone satisfactory, school drill very good, copy books and exercise boons generally highly satisfactory, school apparatus in good order, library small, general progress for the year exceedingly good. Mr Morgan may well feel proud of such a report, as under the heading of “ Progress tor the year ” his is the only school described as stated above. Some o? the others being put down as “ very good,” “ very fair,” and so on. Parents of children have reason to be thankful that they have amongst them a gentleman so competent to import, knowledge to the youth of the community, The Now Zealand Governmental geographical knowledge must be extremely limited. Fancy a printed wrapper encircling parliamentary papers being as follows ; “ Exempt “ from postage. On Public Service only. “ Cover to be sent by the Government Prin- “ ter only. New Zealand Parliamentary “ papers. ‘ Poverty Bay Standard,’ Gis- “ borne, Napier.” No wonder Gisborne is forgotten, and receives little or nothing from tho Government, when it is considered by the big bugs in Wellington, that it is part and parcel of Napier. Would it not he well for a deputation, consisting of members of the Borough and Cook County Councils to visit, the seat of Government and explain that nearly 101) miles separate the two towns, and also explain that Napier is in the Provincial Di- ; ii rof Hawke's Buy, whilst Gisborne is . I’ -f ,ru. tbe Enrii.-k;”en magistrates recently a named Ficvh was charged with having cursed the Queen twice. For this offence the accused was committed to Omagh Gaol j for one month with hard labor.
