A large shark, measuring about 15 feet long, was caught at the Mahia last week ; its horrid jaw’—capacious enough to take in a man easily—was armed with formidable rows of jagged teeth. The monster was observed by Mr Wm. Morris, a short dirtance from the shore, whither it was attracted by the carcass of a whale lying in the water. Mr Morris put out with several others into a whale boat, and succeeded in harpooning the brute, but had to return to the shore to fetch a lance with which to despatch it, the shark in the meantime “ making play ” with the line ; however, they soon- hauled up alongside again, and after some little man«euvring killed it. and towed the carcass ashore. While in its dying agonies, it lashed the water into foam with its fluke, which was three feet across from tip to tip, and had it struck the l>oat would no doubt have stove it in.—Wairoa Guardian.
