SIMONSEN’S OPERA COMPANY.

GIROFLE GIROFLA. Tins taking Opera was produced at Parnell and Boylan's Hull last evening, notwithstanding the fact that the Company arrived late, the steamer having been detained by head winds. Necessarily our time is short, and our critic will have to take another opportunity of reviewing the rendition, of the piece. “ Taking one consideration with another ” to quote from the Pirates of Penzance, the Opera was really well mounted, and those present enjoyed a thorough treat. The greatest praise must be given to Mr Simonsen for his promptitude, as within an hour and a half of his arrival his company was singing to a large, and highly appreciative, audience. It would be almost unfair to attempt to give a criticism upon the performance, for as Mr Simonsen stated, in apology, they had just landed after a very severe passage, but although there were one or two slight shortcomings, the company, as a whole, gave proof of its undoubted excellence, and the singing of the more prominent characters gave promise of the treats in store for us. The choruses are excellent, and the orchestra under the leadership of Mr Simonsen, is far superior to anything we have ever heard in Gisborne. To-night, La Fille de Madame Angot, will be produced.
